Cuba reiterated its commitment to international criminal justice at the 18th Assembly of the States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

The Hague, December 4, 2019. The Ambassador of Cuba in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, H.E. Mrs. Soraya Alvarez Núñez, intervened, in her capacity as representative of Observer State of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC in the general debate of the 18th Assembly of its States Parties, which takes place from December 2nd to 7th in The Hague, The Netherlands.

The head of the Cuban delegation reiterated Cuba's position in favor of the establishment of a truly impartial international criminal jurisdiction, must be non-selective, effective, impartial and free from any political interests and double standards. She stressed that the exercise of the ICC competence should remain independent from the United Nations Security Council and its functions are complementary to the national criminal jurisdictions of the States Parties.

The Ambassador stated that Cuba as an Observer State in the Assembly of States Parties has full disposition to continue participating in the negotiation processes related to the ICC in the General Assembly of the United Nations, especially the Resolution, entitled: “Report of the International Criminal Court”, which is adopted every year in that important forum. In addition, she emphasized that Cuba will continue to fight against impunity and will continue to be committed to international criminal justice, with adherence to the principles of independence and impartiality and with the application and respect of International Law.
