Cuba, an example of how innovation can be driven for something other than profit

London, 13 May 2021.- In a statement yesterday in the debate about HM The Queen’s speech at the House of Lords, Baroness Bryan of Partick made reference to the conflict existing between the pharmaceutical industry and the need for health resources, particularly Covid vaccines, to reach everybody. The Baroness said that Cuba is “is an example of how innovation can be driven by something other than profit.

She underlined that “it is a global leader in the South-South transfer of technology, helping low-income countries develop their own domestic biotech capabilities, providing technical training, and facilitating access to low-cost, life-saving medicines.”

The Baroness concluded by saying that “this model puts health before profits and is one where greed is not the driving factor. It should be the example that the developed world follows.”
