En declaraciones a la prensa acreditada en el cónclave, Rodríguez aseguró que la cita colombiana sucedió en condiciones similares al encuentro UE-América Latina en 1999, cuando no estaba fundada la Celac.
Según rememoró, entonces el líder histórico de la Revolución cubana, Fidel Castro, denunció la amenaza del imperialismo estadounidense para la paz e integración regional y esas circunstancias se repiten ahora por la hostilidad del Gobierno de Donald Trump en América Latina y el Caribe.
Para el canciller cubano, el debate en la Cumbre fue excelente y la mayoría de los concurrentes manifestó su posición a favor de una asociación en el área que tuviera en cuenta las diferencias entre las naciones y los intereses genuinos de los pueblos latinoamericanos y caribeños.
Por otra parte, destacó la exhortación de los líderes de América Latina y el Caribe a establecer un nuevo orden internacional y una arquitectura financiera global más justa.
También consideró importante la exigencia de respeto e igualdad de derechos en todas las relaciones entre los países latinoamericanos y caribeños y sus socios europeos.
El jefe de la diplomacia cubana elogió los planteamientos orientados a fortalecer el enfrentamiento al narcotráfico y el crimen organizado, pero lamentó que la Declaración de Santa Marta no se refiriera de modo más contundente a la amenaza de Estados Unidos en la región.
Preferimos un documento más directo y radical, comentó, y señaló que la Declaración no refleja suficientemente el debate producido acerca de la defensa de América Latina y el Caribe como zona de paz frente a las amenazas estadounidense, manifestó el Canciller de la isla.

Speaking to the press accredited to the summit, Rodríguez said that the Colombian meeting took place in similar conditions to the EU-Latin America meeting in 1999, when CELAC had not yet been founded.

He also highlighted the call by Latin American and Caribbean leaders to establish a new international order and a more equitable global financial architecture.
He also considered important the demand for respect and equal rights in all relations between Latin American and Caribbean countries and their European partners.
The head of Cuban diplomacy praised the proposals aimed at strengthening the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime, but regretted that the Santa Marta Declaration did not refer more forcefully to the threat posed by the United States in the region.
We prefer a more direct and radical document, he commented, noting that the Declaration does not sufficiently reflect the debate that has taken place on defending Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace in the face of threats from the United States, said the island's foreign minister.
