CELAC Summit closing statement

The Fifth Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States concluded in Dominican Republic with the adoption of a political declaration and a plan of action.
The Summit began with a minute of silence in homage to Fidel Castro, about whom the President of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina, remarked:  “Castro was one of the main promoters of the Community and a firm believer throughout his life in the dream of a region united in the path of progress”.
Issues in the documents approved include the need to end the US blockade against Cuba, food security, migration and development, the drug problem, nuclear disarmament,  financing for development, the return to Cuba of the territory occupied by the US naval base in Guantanamo and other issues.
The meeting was attended by presidents of Cuba,Ecuador, Bolivia, and El Salvador, to whom the Dominican Republic handed over the pro tempore presidency.
