Completion of a Solidarity Project Ensures Energy Autonomy for the Joaquín Paneca Consuegra Hospital in Yaguajay

With the recent installation of a solar panel system and energy storage equipment, a long-cherished dream has become a reality at the “Joaquín Paneca Consuegra” Hospital: ensuring the energy autonomy of this healthcare institution located in the municipality of Yaguajay, in the province of Sancti Spíritus.

This achievement carries profound historical and human significance. The building that now houses the hospital was once a barracks of the Batista dictatorship and a setting for the heroic deeds of Commander Camilo Cienfuegos and his troops during the Battle of Yaguajay. Following the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, that stronghold of repression was transformed into a place devoted to the health and well-being of the population. The hospital’s current energy sovereignty renews the profound symbolism of a place that transformed weapons into medicine.

This achievement is the result of the dedication of Cubans residing in Luxembourg and Belgium, together with the continued support of friends from Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, and Albania.

The initiative arose from the deep sense of belonging and love for his homeland felt by Cuban compatriot Ismael Ramos and his family. From Luxembourg, together with the association of Cuban residents in that country, they launched a fundraising campaign that quickly extended beyond the borders of the Grand Duchy. In Belgium, the cause was promoted and supported by our compatriots, with the active participation of members of “La Maleta Solidaria”. Personal contributions and donations from Cuban organizations in France, Germany, Spain and other European countries also joined the effort.

Vital support for this mobilization came from solidarity organizations supporting the Island in Belgium, including Cubanismo, Friends of Cuba, the Belgian Coordination for the Lifting of the Blockade, and the Latin American Solidarity Coordination in Belgium, as well as activists and leaders of the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB). Also noteworthy was the contribution of numerous individual donors, whose generosity gave this gesture a heartfelt, family-like character. Among them, special recognition is due to the Belgian siblings Toon Danhieux and Bea Vandewalle.

From the Embassy of Cuba in Belgium and the Mission of Cuba to the European Union, we express our deepest and most enduring gratitude to all those whose efforts made it possible for the energy siege imposed by the Government of the United States to be broken today in Yaguajay.

In this regard, Ambassador Juan Antonio Fernández Palacios stated: “Faced with the silent genocide through which Washington seeks to suffocate us and force us into submission, solidarity and the love of men and women of goodwill have prevailed. Today, they stand up for Cuba, which, in the words of our Apostle, is to rise for all time.”

This milestone once again demonstrates that we are not alone. The Island can count on a patriotic and committed community abroad, as well as on valuable friends who remain steadfast in their determination to turn their support into concrete action in solidarity with the Cuban people’s resistance.

And because the sun cannot be blockaded, we will continue promoting similar projects for the benefit of our people. In the face of the permanent threat of the blockade, Cuba will prevail!
