Estimadas y estimados amigos, colegas, compatriotas:
Cada época plantea nuevas preguntas al pasado y exige a cada generación interpretar a las grandes figuras históricas a la luz de sus propias inquietudes. Frente a una figura de la dimensión continental y universal de Fidel Castro, el panorama editorial a menudo ha caído en extremos: la simplificación, la demonización o la reducción del líder a un mero ícono. Por eso, asumir la tarea de escribir sobre su vida y obra representa un desafío monumental, como lo es acercarnos al hombre, al ser humano, más allá del símbolo. Estas ideas, son fácilmente apreciables desde que nos adentramos en la lectura del libro que, con inmenso orgullo, presentamos a ustedes. Es para la misión diplomática cubana en Bruselas una alegría y un compromiso acoger este evento.
Hoy nos reúne una obra necesaria e indispensable. Con “Fidel Castro más allá del mito”, Katrien Demuynck y Marc Vandepitte han optado por el camino más exigente y valioso: el del rigor histórico, la objetividad y la seriedad intelectual. Como bien señala Ignacio Ramonet en el prólogo de la versión al español de este libro, los autores no pretenden convencer al lector para que admire a Fidel, sino algo mucho más profundo: proponen comprenderlo. “Comprender cómo aquel joven abogado de Santiago de Cuba se convirtió en uno de los mayores estrategas revolucionarios y en una de las figuras geopolíticas más influyentes del siglo XX; comprender por qué una pequeña isla del Caribe pudo ejercer una influencia diplomática y moral sin parangón en el escenario internacional”.
La historia de Cuba en el siglo XX es sencillamente incomprensible sin la acción permanente de Fidel Castro y del movimiento liberador que lideró. Es muy atinado que esta obra abra sus páginas recordando aquel 1953, año del centenario del Apóstol José Martí, cuando Fidel encabezó a un grupo de jóvenes en el asalto al Cuartel Moncada. Ese hecho marcó un punto de inflexión definitivo en la historia nacional y dio inicio a la etapa final por la verdadera independencia y dignidad de nuestra Patria.
Hablar de Katrien y de Marc es hablar de dos entrañables y probados amigos de Cuba. Su solidaridad no es circunstancial, es una trayectoria de vida. Ambos han sido merecedores de la Medalla de la Amistad que otorga el Estado cubano —Katrien en 2007 y Marc en 2021— por su incansable labor de acompañamiento a nuestro pueblo. Guardamos un agradecimiento infinito por la batalla que libraron, con Katrien a la vanguardia, por la liberación de nuestros Cinco Héroes, llegando incluso a visitar a Gerardo Hernández en las prisiones de Estados Unidos. Recientemente tuvimos la alegría de contar con su presencia en La Habana durante el coloquio Fidel: Legado y Futuro.
Esta presentación en Bélgica no es un hecho aislado. Se enmarca en los homenajes que tienen lugar en todo el mundo para conmemorar el centenario de Fidel. En Cuba tenemos la certeza de que no dejaremos morir a Fidel en el año de su centenario, como tampoco lo permitirán los amigos que, como Katrien y Marc, defienden la verdad de nuestra historia desde cualquier rincón del planeta.
Enriquecido con el prólogo de Ignacio Ramonet y los aportes de valiosos intelectuales como Alexander Deprez, este libro es una invitación a la reflexión honesta. Les aseguro que disfrutarán y aprenderán de cada una de sus páginas, como lo hemos hecho nosotros.

Remarks by Juan Antonio Fernández, Cuba’s Ambassador to Belgium and to the European Union, at the presentation of the book “Fidel Castro: Beyond the Myth”
Dear friends, colleagues, and compatriots,
Each era poses new questions to the past and requires each generation to interpret the great personalities of history in the light of its own concerns. When confronted with a figure of continental and universal stature like Fidel Castro, the publishing landscape has often fallen into extremes: simplification, demonization, or the reduction of the leader to a mere icon.
For this reason, taking on the task of writing about his life and work represents a monumental challenge, as does approaching the man, the human being, beyond the symbol. These ideas become readily apparent as soon as we delve into the book we are presenting to you with immense pride. For the Cuban diplomatic mission in Brussels, hosting this event is both a source of great joy and a commitment.
Today, we are gathered here to present a necessary and indispensable work. With Fidel Castro Beyond the Myth, Katrien Demuynck and Marc Vandepitte have chosen the most demanding and valuable path: that of historical rigor, objectivity, and intellectual seriousness. As Ignacio Ramonet rightly points out in the foreword to the Spanish-language edition of this book, the authors do not seek to persuade the reader to admire Fidel, but rather something far more profound: they seek to help the reader understand him.

The history of Cuba in the 20th century is simply incomprehensible without the sustained actions of Fidel Castro and the liberation movement he led. It is entirely fitting that this work opens its pages by recalling that year, 1953, the centenary of the Apostle José Martí, when Fidel led a group of young people in the assault on the Moncada Barracks. That event marked a definitive turning point in the nation’s history and ushered in the final stage in the struggle for the true independence and dignity of our Homeland.
To speak of Katrien and Marc is to speak of two dear and steadfast friends of Cuba. Their solidarity is not circumstantial; it is a lifelong commitment. Both have been recipients of the Medal of Friendship awarded by the Cuban State—Katrien in 2007 and Marc in 2021—in recognition of their tireless work in standing alongside our people. We hold an infinite gratitude for the struggle they waged, with Katrien at the forefront, for the release of our Five Heroes, and even visiting Gerardo Hernández in United States prisons. More recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming them to Havana during the symposium Fidel: Legacy and Future.
This presentation in Belgium is not an isolated event. It is part of the tributes taking place around the world to commemorate Fidel’s centenary. In Cuba, we are certain that we will not allow Fidel to die in the year of his centenary, nor will friends such as Katrien and Marc, who defend the truth of our history from every corner of the planet, allow it.
Enriched by the foreword by Ignacio Ramonet and contributions from distinguished intellectuals such as Alexander Deprez, this book is an invitation to honest reflection. I assure you that you will enjoy and learn from every page, just as we have.
