Queridos/as compañeros/as:
Nos reunimos en ocasión del Centenario del natalicio del Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz. Como nosotros, millones de mujeres y hombres en todo el mundo celebran esta fecha, porque Fidel es, y seguirá siendo, un referente de las luchas revolucionarias y anti imperialistas, de las legítimas aspiraciones de los pueblos por la emancipación y la justicia social.
Esta es solo una pequeña parada en una ruta conmemorativa mucho más extensiva, que desde Bélgica, se ha preparado como parte de los honores que, en todo el mundo, tienen lugar alrededor de la vida y obra del Comandante en Jefe.
No podré hacer aquí una evocación extensiva de la magnitud de la figura de Fidel, el tiempo no sería suficiente. Fidel está presente en cada uno de nosotros, en la imaginación creativa de nuestra infancia, en el empuje de nuestra juventud, en el sacrificio diario de nuestras trabajadoras y trabajadores, en la gloria de nuestros combatientes.
Solo así se justifica el fracaso estrepitoso del imperialismo yanqui en su obcecada obsesión por derrotar a la Revolución Cubana intentando rendir a nuestro pueblo heroico, noble y generoso. Han apostado todo a la máxima presión del bloqueo criminal y el cerco energético, pero han chocado con la inquebrantable voluntad de nuestra gente de resistir con dignidad. Han hecho un cálculo equivocado, pretendiendo un colapso inminente, pero han encontrado a una nación determinada mantener su soberanía e independencia. ¡Gran error pretender que dejáramos morir a Fidel en el año de su Centenario!
Compañeros, compañeras, la Patria está en peligro y, como nunca antes, necesita de sus mejores hijos. La consagración diaria a nuestras tareas, es el mejor aporte que podemos hacer en estas circunstancias. La guía de actuación nos la ha dado el propio Fidel cuando sentenció: “Es verdad que aún estamos bajo el bloqueo imperialista, es verdad que los imperialistas tratan de estrechar ese bloqueo, y que no sabemos cuán largo tiempo tendremos que resistir esa situación. ¡Y la resistiremos! ¡Porque la bandera revolucionaria no se plegará jamás! ¡Porque la frente alta de esta nación no se doblegará jamás!
¡Gloria eterna al Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro!
¡Hasta la victoria Siempre! ¡Patria o Muerte!

Remarks delivered by the Ambassador of Cuba, Juan Antonio Fernández Palacios, on the occasion of the centenary of the Commander-in-Chief
Dear comrades:
We are gathered here to mark the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz. Like us, millions of women and men around the world are commemorating this date, because Fidel is, and will continue to be, a point of reference for revolutionary and anti-imperialist struggles, as well as for the legitimate aspirations of peoples seeking emancipation and social justice.
This is only one small stop on a much larger commemorative journey which has been organized from Belgium as part of the worldwide tributes honoring the life and work of the Commander-in-Chief.
I will not attempt here to give an exhaustive account of the magnitude of Fidel’s legacy; there would simply not be enough time. Fidel lives on in every one of us, in the creative imagination of our childhood, in the energy and determination of our youth, in the daily sacrifice of our working women and men, and in the glory of our combatants.
This is the only way to understand the resounding failure of U.S. imperialism in its relentless obsession with defeating the Cuban Revolution and bringing our heroic, noble, and generous people to their knees. They have placed all their hopes in exerting maximum pressure through the criminal blockade and the energy siege, but they have come up against the unshakable determination of our people to resist with dignity. They miscalculated, expecting an imminent collapse, only to find a nation firmly determined to defend its sovereignty and independence. What a grave mistake to believe that we would let Fidel die in the year of his Centenary!
Comrades, the Homeland is in danger and, as never before, needs its best sons and daughters. In these circumstances, our unwavering dedication to our daily responsibilities is the greatest contribution we can make. Fidel himself showed us the path to follow when he declared: “It is true that we are still under the imperialist blockade; it is true that the imperialists are trying to tighten that blockade, and that we do not know how long we will have to endure this situation. And we will endure it! Because the revolutionary flag will never be lowered! Because this nation, holding its head high, will never bow!
Eternal glory to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro!
