Bruselas, 10 agosto de 2022/ La Unión Europea (UE) señaló hoy que está lista para coordinar la ayuda a Cuba ante el incendio desatado en la zona industrial de Matanzas, tras la activación de su mecanismo de Protección Civil.
El comisario europeo de Gestión de Crisis, Janez Lenarcic, precisó que España enviará el próximo viernes a la isla medicamentos e insumos médicos, por lo que sería el primero de los 27 Estados miembros del bloque en responder tras la activación.
En su cuenta en Twitter, el funcionario expresó solidaridad con las víctimas del accidente, desencadenado por el impacto de un rayo en uno de los depósitos de crudo de la Base de Supertanqueros de la occidental ciudad, donde se produjeron varias explosiones y un voraz fuego que se extendió a otros tres tanques.
El mecanismo de Protección Civil permite a Bruselas coordinar la ayuda frente a emergencias, una iniciativa aplicada más de 500 veces desde el 2001.
El pasado fin de semana, el alto representante de la UE para Asuntos Exteriores, Josep Borrell, había manifestado respaldo al pueblo de la isla.
“Ante el trágico incendio en tanque de almacenamiento de crudo en Matanzas, Cuba, expreso mi solidaridad con las víctimas y traslado el apoyo de la UE al pueblo cubano en estos momentos difíciles”, dijo entonces.
El accidente del pasado viernes causó hasta el momento una persona fallecida, más de 120 lesionadas y 14 desaparecidas, además de miles de evacuados y cuantiosos daños materiales.

EU activates civil protection to support Cuba in the face of fire
Brussels, Aug 10/ The European Union (EU) said today it is ready to coordinate aid to Cuba in the face of the fire that broke out in the Matanzas industrial zone, after the activation of its Civil Protection mechanism.
The European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, specified that Spain will send medicines and medical supplies to the island next Friday, making it the first of the 27 member states of the bloc to respond after activation.
On his Twitter account, the official expressed solidarity with the victims of the accident, triggered by the impact of lightning in one of the crude tanks of the Supertanker Base in the western city, where several explosions and a raging fire occurred that it spread to three other tanks.
The Civil Protection mechanism allows Brussels to coordinate aid in emergencies, an initiative applied more than 500 times since 2001.
Last weekend, the high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, had expressed support for the people of the island.
"Faced with the tragic fire in a crude oil storage tank in Matanzas, Cuba, I express my solidarity with the victims and convey the support of the EU to the Cuban people in these difficult times," he said then.
Last Friday's accident has so far caused one person to die, more than 120 injured and 14 missing, in addition to thousands of evacuees and extensive material damage.
