Ambassador of Cuba offers an interview for Saudi television

Riyadh, July 24th - The Cuban Ambassador, Vladimir González, granted an interview for the Saudi television program "Diplomacy". He addressed bilateral relations between Cuba and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in recent years, and commented on the actions carried out by the Embassy of the Island to strengthen them during 10 months of work.

Answering the questions by journalist Cyma Aziz, the diplomat recalled that diplomatic relations between Cuba and the Kingdom were established in 1956, before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. He noted that Arabia was the first Arab nation to establish diplomatic ties with the archipelago.

The Ambassador specified that bilateral relations were reactivated at the beginning of the 21st century, when in 2003 the first visit of a Cuban foreign minister to Saudi Arabia took place, followed by the opening of the Embassy of the Caribbean nation in Riyadh in 2007. Four years later, the Saudi Embassy in Havana was inaugurated and the Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir paid a visit to Cuba in 2018, the first one at this level.

Vladimir pointed out that the two countries currently have a good collaboration in the field of health and through the participation of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) in several projects of great economic and social importance on the Island. In addition, both parties maintain an excellent coordination in international organizations and forums.

In this sense, he mentioned that the Cuban authorities appreciate the support Saudi Arabia provides, along with the great majority of the international community, to the draft resolution that Cuba presents every year at the United Nations General Assembly, on the need to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the USA against our country for more than six decades. Likewise, he highlighted that recently the Cuban government decided to support the candidature of Saudi Arabia to host the International Expo 2030 in Riyadh.

Concluding the interview, the Ambassador affirmed that up to now he has had an interesting experience in the Kingdom from a professional and personal point of view. In addition, addressing the Saudi friends who would watch the program, he thanked them for their friendship and hospitality, and expressed the wish to continue sharing with them in the next years.
