HAVANA, 17 March, 2025.- The experiences of Cuban women's active participation in the main programs and tasks of our society, their parliamentary work, and other topics of interest were shared this Monday by Ana María Mari Machado, member of the Party Central Committee and vice president of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State, in a fraternal meeting with Dr. Ing Kantha Phavi, Minister of Women's Affairs of the Kingdom of Cambodia, who is visiting our country.
During the cordial exchange held at the National Capitol and with the participation of Teresa Amarelle Boué, member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Council of State, Secretary General of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), Mari Machado highlighted the fundamental and leading role of women in all spheres of economic, political, and social life. A demonstration of the political will of the Cuban State and Government, of the work of the Revolution, and of the legacy of Fidel Castro, Vilma Espín, and other leaders of our country in the areas of women's rights and gender equality in the Greater Antilles.
The Vice President of the Cuban legislature cited as one of the many examples of this full and effective participation the fact that Cuba has the second-largest female parliament in the world, with 55.74 percent of its deputies in the National Assembly; an important achievement recognized internationally by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
At the same time, she elaborated on the National Program for the Advancement of Women, which is of transcendental and profound importance to our society, and on women's rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic, the Family Code, and other current legal provisions.
She also expressed her gratitude for the Asian nation's support in the fight to lift the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. government against our country, and against the unjust inclusion of Cuba on the spurious list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism.
The Cambodian Minister of Women's Affairs acknowledged the achievements of Cuban women in society, conveyed warm greetings from the President of the Cambodian National Assembly, and reiterated the willingness to increase exchanges between both legislative bodies; she also reaffirmed her solidarity with our country.
Also participating in the fruitful meeting were Cristina Luna Morales, Tamara Valido Benítez, Miriam Brito Sarroca, Martha Mesa Valenciano, and Magda Ileana Pérez Matos, chairs of committees of the National Assembly; Jesús Rafael Mora and Marisol Iglesias de la Torre, director and official of International Relations of the Cuban Parliament, respectively; the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Chea Thireak; and other members of the Cambodian delegation.
