Kingston, Jamaica, April 13, 2022. On the afternoon of this Tuesday, the Ambassador of Cuba Fermín Quiñones paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Derrick McKoy, Attorney General of Jamaica, at his offices in New Kingston. In the brief but cordial meeting, both officials shared the interest of strengthening cooperation between the prosecutor's offices of Jamaica and Cuba, with emphasis on academic and professional exchanges. The importance of advancing on the pending issues on the bilateral agenda was highlighted, especially a memorandum of understanding between the prosecutors' offices of both countries.
The Cuban Ambassador took advantage of the visit to update his interlocutor on the situation in Cuba and the effects of the US blockade on the island and its inhabitants. The Attorney General reaffirmed the invariable position of Jamaica and CARICOM rejecting these sanctions and in favor of their immediate lifting.
Dr. McKoy took office as Attorney General of Jamaica in January 2022. His academic credentials include a JD from the University of Leicester, a JD from Nova Southeastern University, and a Masters in International Law. and Comparative from University College London. He was dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus. In 2016 he received the Order of Distinction, at the rank of Commander (CD), for Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession and Public Service in Jamaica.
