Austrian Former President Calls for Closer Links with Cuba

Austrian Former President Heinz Fischer has stated that he is in favor of improving relations between his country and Cuba, the Cuban embassy in Vienna reports today.

In a message circulated by the embassy, Fischer said that he supported an increase in cooperation in political and cultural sectors and also in trade, which he said had a lot of potential.

He added that he regarded the recent signing of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement between Cuba and the European Union (EU) as an important step, as it starts a new chapter in the relationship between the two sides. The politician also said that during a recent visit to Cuba, he was able to verify that the Caribbean country was 'in the midst of an intensive process of modernization and reform that poses great challenges to the people and the Government.'

'Austria has supported this process from the beginning, at the bilateral level and as a EU member,' said Fischer.

Highlighting the 70th anniversary of relations between the two countries, the former president said that this history would pave the way 'for friendly and respectful relations and close collaboration in many areas.'
