Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte headed to Guyana today where he is scheduled to participate in a top-level diplomatic conference between CARICOM foreign ministers and Cuban Minister of Foreign Relations, Bruno Rodriguez Parilla. The Sixth Annual CARICOM-Cuba Ministerial Meeting is being held in Georgetown on June fourteenth.
Mike Peyrefitte, Attorney General
“Well it’s a CARICOM/Cuba summit really, where all the foreign ministers of CARICOM meet with the foreign minister of Cuba to discuss the issues that affect our region. Whether we like it or not, the countries that we live nearby, those are the countries we live nearby and we have to sit down and we have to talk and we have to discuss issues such as security and trade, education and the like. The foreign minister could not make it so he has tasked me to go to Georgetown, Guyana today, for that meeting along with the CARICOM foreign ministers and the foreign minister of Cuba.”
Isani Cayetano
“Is there anything of concern that Belize will be voicing at this particular session?”
Mike Peyrefitte
“Not necessarily. Like I said, I wouldn’t want to preempt the discussions either. Everything is on the table, of course the, what I would like to call the four hundred pound gorilla in the room is that you know Cuba’s relationship with the United States. The United States is a world power, but Cuba as well is our sister and so the discussions, I am sure, will be fruitful and hopefully we can come with a consensus CARICOM position on all the discussions that we have.”
