Kingston, Jamaica, 18 April 2022. Casa de las Américas, through its Centro de Estudios del Caribe, convokes the VIII International Colloquium Cultural Diversity in the Caribbean: Resilience and Creation in Pandemic Scenarios. Taking into consideration the complexity of life at global and regional level during the past two years, we will broach the new physical and virtual spaces of cultural participation during the pandemic.
It will likewise be interesting to review the work of artists, intellectuals, academics and cultural actors in the communities, with a view to visualize the basic problems derived from the expansion period of the virus. Also commented will be the alternatives to creation and production of cultural contents beyond the limitations imposed by the sanitary measures.
Various publications, websites and communitarian projects have adapted communication channels and work tools in order to have an impact on the life and concerns of the people. It has undoubtedly been a challenge, since all these new forms of communication and cultural action exist in a space-time where daily life has become more precarious and where the global crisis caused by the pandemic has come together with natural disasters, political violence, and lack of resources to face the results of this whole mixture of unfavorable conditions.
Hence, we propose as main topics of debate the following:
a) Culture in times of covid-19: public and institutional policies.
b) Artistic circulation and new spaces for communication and social transformation.
c) Social movements and artistic groups: an alliance for participation through solidarity networks and support groups to fight the crisis.
d) Press, periodicals and social networks: media construction during and after the pandemic.
e) Education and environmental care in times of covid-19.
