On the morning of 18 February, five dozen young people gathered at the Che Guevara monument square in the city of Tseri to start the caravan organised by the United Democratic Youth Organisation - EDON and the Cyprus Cuba Friendship Association on the occasion of the 65th Anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution and against the unjust, unilateral and genocidal blockade imposed by the United States Government against the Cuban people for more than 60 years.
In the opening remarks of the caravan, the Cuban Ambassador, Angel Gustavo Suárez Cordero thanked on behalf of the people, the Cuban government and himself for the gesture of the Cypriot youth who always remained militant in their solidarity with the Cuban people. For his part, the Secretary General of EDON, Seviros Koulas pointed out that this is a crucial moment and that Cuba as a beacon and guide of the Latin American and international left deserves all the support of the peoples and left movements around the world.
The young people on bicycles and in cars rode with joy, with Cuban and Cypriot flags, more than 7 kilometres from the town of Tseri to the Cuban Embassy in Strovolos, Nicosia.
At the end of the caravan they were received at the Embassy by the representatives of the Cuban Mission in Cyprus and shared with the Ambassador, who presented the main effects of the US blockade on Cuba, particularly those extraterritorial measures that in recent months have also reached Cyprus. The Cuban diplomat once again thanked everyone for their presence and particularly for their support for the Cuban people. The Ambassador answered several questions from the young people, who were curious about the daily life of Cubans in the face of so many vicissitudes and the work of the Cuban government to get ahead in the face of such a great economic challenge ahead.
Vera Policarpou, Secretary of the Cyprus-Cuba Friendship Association and Head of International Relations of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus - AKEL, explained to the young people how the blockade has affected the Cuban people, but also how the political will of the government and the people to move forward has turned the Caribbean island into a country of "men of science", always organised by the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro. In his speech, he recalled moments when he shared interesting conversations with the former Cypriot President and former Secretary General of AKEL, Dimitris Christofias, and recognised what Cuba has done in the field of biotechnology, not only for the Cuban people but also for the world.
The activity concluded with the invitation of the Ambassador to develop meetings with the youth and the commitment of the Secretary General of EDON to organise other activities on Cuba (EmbaCuba Cyprus).
