Port of Spain, April 23, 2024. The Spanish Language Day was celebrated this morning at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad and Tobago. The activity was organized by the Department of Languages and Modern Linguistics of the institution and was sponsored by the Spanish-speaking Embassies accredited in the country. There were several speakers who paid tribute to Miguel de Cervantes with the reading of his masterpiece "Don Quixote de la Mancha", officials and Ambassadors of the Diplomatic Corps, as well as students and professors of the University. The Embassy of Cuba was represented by the Counselor, Leydis Bernal Suárez.
April 23 was selected due to the anniversary of the death of the great genius of Spanish letters, Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra. Coincidentally, the date of his death coincides with that of the most prestigious English playwright, William Shakespeare. Hence, both languages share the day to commemorate Spanish Language Day, an emblematic date that coincides with the anniversary of the death of two giants of world literature.
