Nigeria, May 25, 2022.- The Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today recalled the celebration of Africa Day and the bond that unites that continent with the Cuban people. “Africa, origin and destiny. We commemorate today, May 25, Africa Day. A continent that constitutes a point of origin, a common destiny and all hope, ”the president wrote on his Twitter profile.
The president of the National Assembly of People's Power, Esteban Lazo, also sent greetings today to the African nations and referred to the special significance of the date for Cuba due to the deep and unbreakable relationship that unites Cubans with the peoples of that continent. He added that those ties were forged under the guidance and friendship of Fidel Castro and other leaders of the Island with the African heroes. Lazo highlighted the participation of Cuban internationalists in the struggle of the peoples of the continent against colonialism, domination, apartheid, as well as Havana's contribution to different cooperation programs.
He thanked the support of the African Union for the resolutions approved in the United Nations calling for the lifting of the US blockade against Cuba, as well as similar statements by governments, political parties and solidarity organizations.
The message confirmed the will to expand and strengthen multilateral interparliamentary ties and Havana's support for the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
For his part, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla pointed out on his Twitter profile that "brotherhood and solidarity guide the deep and unbreakable relationship between Africa and Cuba." “We are peoples united by history, with shared struggles and causes, heirs to an extraordinary cultural heritage.
On Africa Day we renew our commitment to the region”, he added. On May 19, a day of celebration for Africa Day began in Cuba, during which various activities have been developed to highlight the historical ties with the nations of that continent and the current collaboration programs. While at the Embassy of Cuba in Nigeria numerous initiatives have been developed to commemorate such a relevant date for everyone.
Decreed with the aim of publicizing the challenges of African nations, this Day is celebrated annually inspired by the celebration in 1958 of the Congress of African States, in which the decision of these peoples to achieve their independence was expressed.
