CUBA AND THE XVII NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT SUMMIT

As everyone surely knows, Cuba, like other major countries like India, Egypt and the former Yugoslavia, is one of the founders of NAM. Since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in January 1959, the foreign policy of the island has been focused on the guiding principles, emanating from the First Summit of Bandung in 1955 and the XIV Declaration of NOAL Summit in Havana 2006.

Since the 13th of this month began in Margarita Island, Venezuela the XVII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, which groups more than 120 countries and together with  the Group of 77 it is one of the largest and most representative of our day. The event is preceded by the Senior Officials Meeting and Ministerial Meeting, culminating on 17 and 18 with the Meeting of Heads of State and Government. The theme is PEACE, SOVEREIGNTY AND SOLIDARITY FOR DEVELOPMENT. During these days the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela will assume with dignity the presidency Pro Tempore of the Organization, until the next Summit in 2019.

This meeting takes place in the context of the 55th anniversary of the Bandung Summit and in the midst of a turbulent and complex world where the principles that gave rise to this movement are in constant danger, such as sovereignty, independence, development, peace and international security and the need to combat climate change that will preserve the human species. It is for this reason that Cuba will present in this new meeting, as the main forum for coordination of the South, the PROCLAMATION OF LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN, AS ZONE OF PEACE, which is a contribution of our region to the fulfillment of the main purposes of NAM. Our country will also defend the right of peoples to self-determination, non-interference in internal affairs of countries, resolving conflicts without resorting to use of force and we will pronounce against unconventional wars and unjust international economic order imposed to our peoples. Cuba will denounce again the presence of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the government of the United States for more than half a century against the island, which still persists as a violation of human rights of the Cuban people, despite the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. We will also denounce the illegal occupation of the territory of Guantanamo, where US imposed a military base that is maintained for more than a century against the will of the Cuban people.

We are convinced that the holding of the XVII NOAL Summit will be an important contribution of the Organization to the desires of the majority of the people who today defend the most sacred interests of humanity: life.
