Cuba hosts international course on nuclear physics energy
Havana, February 21 - Cuba, with high recognition from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is hosting for two weeks a course on nuclear physical security, for young professionals from 13 countries with a complete and global vision of the subject.
The scientific secretary of the event, Oum Hakan, told the press that this is the first time that this type of course has been held outside Europe, particularly in Cuba, due to the extensive and good relations existing with the island and the opportunity to maintain this type of cooperation in the field of improvement.
Hakan, who is the director of the IAEA's Training and Education Program, stressed that it is the only international course with a complete vision of physical and nuclear security, which also offers a network for the training and preparation of Latin American professionals in their native language.
The director of the course Alexis Silva, which will be held from February 19 to March 1, explained that it is sponsored by the IAEA and organized by the Cuban Ministries of the Interior (Minint) and Science, Technology and Environment (Citma), for 25 professionals from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.
This is an event to provide basic knowledge on nuclear safety in nuclear facilities with the presence of 11 experts from Spain, the United States, Morocco, Brazil, Argentina and Cuba to exchange experiences and show Cuban expertise and potential in this field.
He indicated that the topics will deal with the legal framework for nuclear physical security, computer security and security of radioactive and nuclear materials, accounting and control of these products, systems and measures for large public events, detection of materials out of regulatory control, radiological crimes and nuclear criminalistics in support of investigations.
Silva emphasized that nuclear physical security has the responsibility of guaranteeing or avoiding unauthorized access, theft, sabotage of any nuclear or other radioactive material of the facilities that use them for peaceful purposes.
Referring to the importance that Cuba attaches to these issues, he highlighted the presence of experts from the Directorate of Nuclear Security of the Citma, the Minint and the General Customs of the Republic, while commenting that the country is in the process of updating the bases and devices in this area and its entire control regime.
He highlighted that Cuba was chosen for this course because it is a reference in Latin America and the Caribbean, for its good links with relevant organizations such as the IAEA, with which it maintains a magnificent collaboration in sectors such as health, industry, agriculture and everything related to the peaceful use of these technologies for the development of the nation.
