Vienna, November 27, 2024 - The Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba, Eduardo Martinez Diaz, participated in the high-level panel of the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications and the Technical Cooperation Program of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) entitled: “ARCAL: 40 years transforming the region with nuclear science and technology”.
The panel, held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the ARCAL Regional Agreement and its impact on the socioeconomic development of Latin America and the Caribbean, fostered a dialogue between authorities and experts on the challenges and opportunities of technical cooperation within the framework of the Agreement.
Ministers and authorities from Brazil, Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras and Peru presented experiences and success stories in the thematic areas of human health, agriculture and food, environment, energy and radiation technologies.
In his speech, Mr. Martínez Díaz highlighted the priorities of Cuba, a small island developing state, related to climate change and the marine environment and detailed the ways in which ARCAL can support the country in this regard.
The senior Cuban official noted that regional cooperation through ARCAL and REMARCO is essential to strengthen the role of Latin America and the Caribbean in global climate mitigation. Sharing knowledge and capabilities on issues such as blue carbon will allow Cuba and the region to consolidate their position as leaders in this field.
The Regional Cooperation Agreement for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARCAL) was established in 1984 to promote the use of nuclear techniques for peaceful and developmental purposes.
