Cuba participates in the United Nations Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week

New York, 6 July 2020. Ambassador Ana Silvia González Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative and Chargé d´Affaires a.i. of Cuba to the United Nations, denounced today the terrorist attack against the Cuban Embassy to the United States on 30 April, and she declared that the government of the United States is still incapable to publicly condemn the act and recognize its terrorist nature.
The Cuban diplomat made the statement during the UN Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week, an event from 6 to 10 July that will bring together Member States, entities of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact, thought leaders, civil society representatives and other stakeholders to exchange views on this important issue.
Rodríguez Abascal, who participated in Panel 1: Post COVID-19 World: Contours, Pivot Points and Benefits of Multilateral Collaboration, described how said terrorist attack against the Cuban diplomatic mission in Washington endangered the lives and safety of the staff of that diplomatic mission and their families. At the time of the shooting with a semi-automatic assault rifle, 10 Cuban diplomats were at the Embassy.
Although she acknowledged the professional and prompt response of the local police and the US secret service forces at the time of the attack, she stated that the same contrasts with the evident complicity of the United States government which entails the danger of being assumed as an endorsement of terrorism.
The senior Caribbean diplomat recalled that groups and individuals who have committed terrorist acts against Cuba have operated for years and still operate with impunity on US territory; all of which the law enforcement agencies of the government of the United States are fully aware.
