Cuba reiterates its position in favor of the establishment of an impartial, effective and just international criminal jurisdiction in the 17th Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

The Hague, December 12, 2018. The Ambassador of Cuba in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, S.E. Ms. Soraya Alvarez Núñez intervened, as an Observer State, in the general debate of the 17th Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which took place between December 5 and 12, in The Hague , Netherlands.

In her words, the Ambassador stressed the need for an international judicial institution with real autonomy, that can effectively lead the fight against impunity for the most serious crimes in the current difficult international situation, where conflicts gain in complexity and pose a greater challenge to face situations that put at risk the peace and security of nations and their populations.

She reiterated Cuba's position in favor of the establishment of a truly impartial, non-selective, effective, just and complementary international criminal jurisdiction of national justice systems, exempt from subordination to political interests that could distort the essence for which it was established. He also stressed that the exercise of the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court must remain independent of the political bodies of the United Nations and always operates in a complementary manner to national criminal jurisdictions.

The Ambassador said that Cuba, as an Observer State of the Rome Statute, is fully prepared to continue participating in the negotiation processes related to the International Criminal Court in the General Assembly of the United Nations, especially the Resolution, entitled: "Report of the International Criminal Court", which is adopted every year in this great forum. In addition, he stressed that Cuba will continue to fight against impunity and committed to international criminal justice, with adherence to the principles of independence and impartiality, as well as, with the application and respect for International Law.
