United Nations, February 19, 2025.- Ambassador Ernesto Soberón, permanent representative of Cuba to the UN, reaffirmed the unwavering commitment that his country has today to international peace and security.

Soberón participated in the general debate of the substantive session of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34), which was held at the headquarters of the multilateral organization in New York.

The ambassador highlighted the main responsibility of the UN in maintaining international peace and security and the need for these operations to be carried out in accordance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.

The Cuban diplomat said that the establishment of new and more complex peacekeeping operations cannot be a substitute for addressing and solving the root causes of conflicts, but rather a temporary measure to create a security framework that allows for the implementation of a long-term strategy towards sustainable economic and social development.

The Caribbean representative stressed the importance of continuing to promote cooperation between troop-contributing countries, the Security Council and the Secretariat, and the importance of the safety of peacekeeping personnel.

And also expressed concern about the use of new technologies in Peacekeeping Operations, and stressed the importance of defining the legal, operational, technical and financial aspects related to the use of modern technology.

The C-34 was created in 1965 by the UN General Assembly with resolution 2006 (XIX) of December 18, 1964, and its fundamental objective is to examine and evaluate UN peacekeeping operations, in order to improve their effectiveness and efficiency.
