The ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in India, Alejandro Simancas Marin, delivered a virtual conference under the theme "Updating the natural convergences between Cuba and India", organized by the Confederation of Young Leaders (CYL), in commemoration of the 62nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which was celebrated last January 12.
CYL President and Director General of the Indian Institute of Governance and Leadership, Mr. Himadrish Suwan, opened the session by highlighting the historic ties of friendship and cooperation that unite Cuba and India. Himadrish stressed the benefits of the medical aid offered by the Caribbean island to millions of people around the world, as well as the success achieved by the literacy program "Yo sí Puedo" (Yes, I Can).He also referred to the progress made in the vaccination campaign of the Cuban population against COVID-19, which surpasses that of many rich nations in the world.
During his speech, Ambassador Alejandro Simancas recalled historic moments that laid the foundations of friendship, dialogue and cooperation, which currently exist between Cuba and India, and stressed the opportunity for young people to maintain this legacy and continue strengthening ties between the two nations. The Cuban diplomat valued India's defense of its sovereignty and national independence, as well as its struggle for unity and consensus, concepts with which we fully identify.
He also stressed the priority Cuba gives to bilateral relations and deeply appreciated the expressions of solidarity of the Indian government and people, demanding the lifting of the unjust and criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. government on Cuba.
The event was attended by more than 40 delegates, who were able to exchange views with the Cuban Ambassador on various issues and it was agreed to hold a conference between youth organizations of both countries in the near future.
