Abuja, February 19, 2025 – The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, signed the book of condolences opened at the Embassy of Namibia in Nigeria after the death of the historic leader and first president of Namibia, Sam Nujoma. In this solemn act, the Cuban diplomat expressed the deep sorrow of the Cuban people and government for the irreparable loss of a close friend of the Cuban Revolution.
Sam Nujoma, considered the father of Namibian independence, was a strong defender of solidarity between peoples and maintained a close relationship with the leaders of the Cuban Revolution, especially with Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz. During her life, Nujoma expressed on multiple occasions her recognition of Cuba's contribution to the liberation struggle of Namibia and other African nations, especially through military support and cooperation in various spheres.
In her message of condolences, Ambassador Morales Palmero highlighted the unbreakable friendship between Cuba and Namibia, cemented in the ideals of justice and self-determination shared by both countries. “The legacy of President Sam Nujoma will remain indelible in the history of Africa and the world. His leadership and commitment to the independence and development of his nation inspired generations, and his bond with Cuba was a symbol of brotherhood between our peoples,” she said.
Cuba and Namibia have maintained relations of cooperation and solidarity over the years in key sectors such as health, education and the training of Namibian professionals in Cuban universities. The imprint of this cooperation is a testimony to the mutual commitment to building a more just and equitable world.
The death of Sam Nujoma represents a great loss not only for the Namibian people, but also for all those who defend the freedom and dignity of peoples. The Caribbean Island honors his memory and reaffirms its commitment to the continuity of the ties of brotherhood and cooperation with Namibia.
