Wellington, August 17, 2017. -Thanks to the support of Otahuhu College, Cuban artist Osemivy Ortega is taking part in the creation of a mural that will be displayed at Auckland International Airport.
The work is being prepared at the College of the homonym suburb of Auckland city. This school stands out for its quality in the teaching of the Visual Arts, among whose group of teachers is Malcolm McCallister, also a member of the Cuba Friendship Society.
It was Professor Malcolm who had the idea of bringing together Kiwi and Cuban artists, after a visit to the school of San Alejandro in Havana, as part of a program organized by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples on the basis of its studies on the education system in the Caribbean island. In San Alejandro Malcolm met Osmeivy, who did not hesitate to take the opportunity to broaden his artistic career... up to the end corner of the South Pacific.
During a recent visit to Otahuhu College, Ambassador Mario Alzugaray witnessed the progress of this project, as well as the different programs that take place at this institution. The Cuban diplomat was really impressed with wood carving classes, with a great value in the education of youngsters from a community with a predominantly Pacific population.
The Embassy of Cuba expresses its gratitude to Otahuhu College for promoting this brilliant collaboration in the field of Visual Arts and its appreciation to Principal Neil Watson and all teachers for their commitment and dedication in the training of new generations. (Embacuba NZ).
