Cuban Deputy President concludes fruitful visit to South Africa

Pretoria, 20 June 2024 - The Deputy President of the Republic of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa, concluded a fruitful visit to South Africa, where he attended the inauguration of the recently elected President, Cyril Ramaphosa, to whom he greeted at the ceremony.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening political dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.

Mr Valdés Mesa was also received by the General Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Solly Mapaila, and the First Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC), Nomvula Mokonyane. In both meetings, the excellent level of party relations was highlighted and the strength of the ties of solidarity between Cuba and South Africa was acknowledged.  

A major highlight of the Cuban leader's short stay in South Africa was the tribute he paid in Freedom Park to the more than two thousand Cubans who died in Africa in the struggles for freedom and independence for the nations of the continent.

On this occasion, the Cuban Deputy President laid a wreath to the Cuban compatriots who gave their lives in internationalist struggles, in accordance with the words of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro: “There was no just cause in Africa that did not have the support of our people”.
