Cuban Embassy in Ottawa Hosts Homage to Che Guevara

Ottawa, October 9, 2017- Near one hundred people representing Cuba solidarity groups and political organizations payed tribute to Ernesto Che Guevara last Sunday, October 8, at the Embassy of Cuba on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

Julio Garmendía, Cuban Ambassador to Canada, made the opening remarks at the Musical Concert in honor of Che Guevara, appraising Che’s major contribution to the fights that led to the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, to the consolidation of a new political project in the 1960´s and to the struggle against the criminal US blockade imposed on Cuba since the early years of the Revolution. Professor François Luzar from CEGEP de l’Outaouais, Gatineau, delivered a speech highlighting Che’s legacy and its impact on the new generations of revolutionaries.

Canadian and Latin American artists performed well-known poems and songs dedicated to the legendary guerrilla fighter. Amanda Moreno and Nayelis Orozco, two talented young girls, payed special tribute to Che Guevara on behalf of all Cuban children in a modest, candid manner just as kids use to. One hundred voices singing “La Guantanamera” ended this authentic homage concert to honor the most universal of Latin Americans marking five decades of his immortality.

Among the invited guests were Ambassadors from Venezuela, Bolivia and Angola as well as other members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Ottawa. The event was attended by Cubans residents in Montreal and Ottawa, members of solidarity groups, namely, Ottawa Cuba Connection and the Round Table Coordinating Committee of Quebec-Cuba Solidarity, and members of other political organizations that are friends of Cuba.
