Cuban Film ´Ya no es Antes´ Showcased at the Ottawa Latin American Film Festival

Ottawa, May 15. –Cuban film ´Ya no es Antes´ (dir. Lester Hamlet) is being screened in many Canadian cities, presented by renowned Cuban actor Luis Alberto García, who plays the male leading character.

´Ya no es Antes´ was first screened in Ottawa on Monday, May 14, during the 22nd Latin American Film Festival (LAFF), which the Canadian Film Institute organizes every spring in the federal capital city. It was a full house screening attended by a large number of Cuban residents in Canada.

The audience went from tears to laughter as the film not only deals with sensitive topics, such as, emigration, uprooting and old loves and memories left behind by those who fled the island, but it also portrays –with a dose of Cuban humor– the hardships faced by those who decide to stay in an economically besieged country,.

Tom McSorley, executive director of the Canadian Film Institute, and Josefina Vidal, Ambassador of Cuba to Canada, delivered the opening remarks. Following the screening, the audience had the opportunity to discuss the film for nearly an hour with Luis Alberto García, who is a regular guest to LAFF.

LAFF was created in 1997 and Cuba has participated at every edition. It is one of Ottawa´s most eagerly  anticipated annual cultural events that features in this city only contemporary premieres, gleaned from the screens of such festivals as Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Chicago and Havana, to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of Latin America.

´Ya no es Antes´ will be screened on Tuesday, May 16th, in Toronto, during an event organized by the Hispanic Canadian Heritage Council. On Saturday, May 19, the film will be showcased in Montreal, as part of the program of the 11th National Meeting of Cubans Residents in Canada.
