Cuban Head of Mission in Liberia participates in activity for the Day of the African Child.

Monrovia, June 14, 2023 - Responding to an invitation made by the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare of the Republic of Liberia in conjunction with the Children's Forum and UNICEF, the Cuban Head of Mission Mercedes L. Martinez Herrera participated in the celebrations for the Day of the African Child.

On June 16, the International Day of the African Child is celebrated around the world, a date to reflect on the serious needs and problems faced by many children on the African continent.

The date was established because on June 16, 1976, thousands of black schoolchildren took to the streets of Soweto, South Africa, protesting against the poor quality of education they were receiving. As a result of this demonstration, hundreds of young people were shot that same day. In the protests that followed for two more weeks, more than a hundred people were killed and more than a thousand injured.

To honor the memory of those who demonstrated in that courageous act, the International Day of the African Child has been celebrated since 1991.
