Monrovia, July 11, 2024. - Liberia joined countries around the world in celebrating World Population Day. The Government of Liberia, in partnership with the United Nations agencies in Liberia, held the World Population Day ceremony at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo's oldest city.
Cuba was represented at the event by Chief of Mission Mercedes L. Martinez Herrera.
This year, World Population Day was celebrated under the theme: "Harnessing the power of inclusive data to achieve a resilient and equitable future for all".
The keynote address at the celebration was delivered by Liberian Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, who in collaboration with the legislature established the Legislative Committee on Population and Development (LCPD) to promote strategic policy discussions on reproductive health, women's empowerment, gender equality and youth issues.
Recognizing World Population Day as an opportunity to promote comprehensive and inclusive policies, it acknowledged the progress made in women's access to reproductive care and gender equality since the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) thirty years ago.
The event included presentations on global population trends, Liberia's demographic profile and the policy implications of population dynamics, culminating in a High Level Panel involving key ministries and international partners moderated by youth representatives to foster intergenerational dialogue on the most pressing issues at stake.
The event was facilitated by the Government of Liberia in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and LISGIS and aimed to engage stakeholders in discussion on the vital intersection between population dynamics and development.
