Vienna, March 27. A Cuban delegation headed by the Hero of the Republic Fernando González Llort, President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), together with members of the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association (ÖKG), paid homage to the victims of Nazism in the Mauthausen Concentration Camp.
In this tribute, which takes place in the framework of the working visit to Austria of the Deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power, the participants toured the areas of the now Memorial and learned about the extermination of more than 90 thousand people at the hands of Nazi soldiers during World War II in the facilities of the former concentration camp.
As a culmination, the members of the delegation, which also included Ambassador Pablo Berti Oliva, placed a wreath next to the plaque that commemorates and pays tribute to the four Cuban internationalists who died as a result of their imprisonment and forced labor in that concentration camp.
The Mauthausen Memorial is located in the facilities that served as a concentration camp for the Nazi regime between 1938 and 1945. About 190,000 people were imprisoned in the camp and its subcamps during the seven years it was in operation. Today it serves as a memorial site for historical and political education.
