Vienna, October 27, 2024. As part of the activities for the Day of Cuban Culture, the Cuban Ambassador to Austria received the original of the poem “Al caer la nieve”, by the politician, lawyer and writer Alfredo Zayas Alfonso, fourth President of the neocolonial Republic.
The poem was written by Alfredo Zayas from the Model Prison of Madrid, after his deportation to Spain in 1896 for his support to the independence movement organized by José Martí. In it he expresses his feelings about his exile and his longing for a Cuba free from Spanish colonial rule.
This historical document has been delivered by the prominent scholar Alfred de Zayas, a relative of the writer, to the Cuban Embassy for its custody and subsequent delivery to the Office of the Historian of Havana.
