As part of the world, the European Union (EU) deeply regretted the application by United States of title III of the Helms-Burton Act against Cuba as contrary to international law.
For the EU, the extraterritorial application of unilateral restrictive measures contravenes international law, so it will use all appropriate measures to deal with the consequences, including their rights in the World Trade Organization and the use of the Status of Blockade of the EU.
The High Representative of Foreign Affairs of the EU, Federica Mogherini, said through a press release that she will continue to work with its international partners, "who also expressed its concern in this regard».
Referring to the decision of Washington of allowing claims in American courts on property "confiscated" (as they call the nationalizations made by the Cuban Revolution), she confirmed that "it is a violation of the commitments made in the agreements EU – United States of 1997 and 1998», which have been observed "without interruption" since.
«This will cause unnecessary friction and undermine the confidence and predictability in the transatlantic partnership,» said Mogherini.
With the activation of title III of the Helms-Burton Act, a section that receives great rejection at national and foreign levels, the administration of American President, Donald Trump, concrete another hostile measure against Cuba.
The controversial legislation, which was approved by the U.S. Congress in 1996, encodes the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington nearly 60 years ago against the Caribbean nation and stresses the extraterritorial character of the siege.
