Port of Spain, November 6, 2024. The Minister of Health, the Honorable Terrance Deyalsingh, Member of Parliament for the St. Joseph constituency, signed the extension of the Agreement for Technical Cooperation in Health alongside the Cuban Ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Gustavo Veliz Olivares.
The brief ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Health of the neighboring Caribbean nation. During his remarks prior to the signing, the Minister of Health reiterated his recognition and gratitude to Cuba for its support to Trinidad and Tobago in the health sector, highlighting more than two uninterrupted decades of collaboration through the presence of Cuban professionals. He particularly emphasized the support provided by Cuban healthcare workers, Cuba's response to combating the COVID-19 pandemic, and the high regard that Cuban collaborators enjoy in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Ambassador reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to collaborating with the Caribbean and, in this instance, with Trinidad and Tobago, despite the severe restrictions imposed on Cuba due to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade by the United States, which significantly impacts the Cuban healthcare system.
Also present at the ceremony were the Permanent Secretary for Health, Mr. Asif Ali, Dr. Orlando Diaz Gomez, Coordinator of the Medical Brigade in Trinidad and Tobago, and a representation of the collaborators who are part of the Medical Brigade.
