Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf receives Cuban Head of Mission.

Monrovia, September 24, 2020 - This afternoon, former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf received the Head of the Diplomatic Mission in the African country Mercedes L. Martínez Herrera.

In a cordial atmosphere they had a pleasant and profitable meeting where mutual understanding prevailed.

The Cuban diplomat updated the former Liberian president on the incidents of the COVID-19 in Cuba and on the Cuban vaccine Soberana-01. Likewise, she provided an overview of the actions of the Cuban Medical Brigades in the world, mainly in Africa in view of the current pandemic.

For her part, the former African leader acknowledged the work done by Cuban doctors in the countries of West Africa when three of their nations were hit by Ebola and highlighted the excellent preparation and quality of our health professionals, and the effectiveness of the Cuban health system.

Ellen Johnson was the first woman elected president in the history of all of Africa and then won her re-election (2006-2018). She is a member of the Council of Women World Leaders; she is a permanent consultant to the UN Economic Commission for Africa; she participated in the International Commission of Inquiry into the Rwandan Genocide, as well as the Congo Peace Commission. She has received the Nobel Peace Prize, the African Gender Award from the NGO Femmes Africa Solidarité, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Indira Gandhi Prize, among others.
