Monrovia, April 5, 2020 - This afternoon, the "Group of Liberian graduated in Cuba" sent to our embassy in Monrovia and published in the social networks its declaration condemning the blockade in view of the situation faced by our country in its fight against the global pandemic COVID-19.
The document was sent to our diplomatic mission and posted on social networks by the executive member of this group, Mr. William Wesseh, a Liberian graduate in Cuba with a degree in Electromedicine.
In this document the members of this organization indicate that they are aware of the practices of solidarity, internationalism, humanism, dignity, resistance and sacrifice of Cuba, which they consider their second homeland.
They point out that Cuba is an embargoed, blocked and impoverished island but that it has some of the best doctors in the world, some of the best health systems in the world and despite the situation that the Cuban people experience every day because of the U.S. blockade, it practices solidarity and internationalism with actions and not words, and is capable of sending doctors to other countries in the world to save lives, as it did here in Liberia during the Ebola epidemic that struck three countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
In their official statement, they indicate that many countries recognize Cuba's support for the peoples of the world in this fight against COVID-19, which their organization not only recognizes but also highlights the role played by this very small country in the difficult days that humanity is living through. That in spite of the blockade of our island, with limitations to acquire medicines, equipment and materials to face this pandemic, with difficulties in commercial operations, with difficulties to receive donations and with scarcity of fuel, only a country like Cuba can extend its hand of friendship to the world.
They clearly express that the blockade is the main obstacle to purchase the medicines, equipment and materials required to face the pandemic and the main obstacle to the development of the country. They call for the end of the blockade and add that this is a moment of unity and solidarity, above all political practice.
