International Seminar for Peace and Abolition of Foreign Military Bases Concluded in Cuba

Pretoria, May 15, 2019.- More than 200 delegates from 20 countries participated in the VI International Seminar for Peace and the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, held in the Cuban province of Guantánamo, territory where it is illegally located, a US military base in total violation of the Cuba legitimate right to its sovereignty.
The delegates, together with the people of Guantanamo, demanded the elimination of enclaves and foreign military installations around the world and the closing of the prison located at the military base since 2006 and converted into a prison and torture center for people of several accused countries of terrorists.
The event was a favorable framework to remember, in addition, the importance and full validity of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, approved by all the Heads of State and Government of the region meeting in Havana in January 2014, during the II Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
At a time when the imperialist offensive led by the United States is trying to destabilize countries in the region such as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, it is worth remembering that these military enclaves imposed against the will of the peoples constitute a real danger for peace and international security.
