The medical and scientific cooperation brings Cuba and the United States together

The cooperation in health and science between Cuban and the United States is the main subject in a special issue of the MEDICC Review that was presented in June 25 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a prestigious scientific institution headquartered on the U.S. capital city.

The event featured the remarks by Rush Holt, AAAS CEO, Gail Reed, Executive of MEDICC Review and José Ramón Cabañas, Ambassador of Cuba to the United States. Likewise, a panel of experts with working experience with Cuba elaborated on the content of some of the articles published in this MEDICC Review’s special issue, showing concrete results of what have been achieved thanks to the collaboration in this field between both countries.

Among the panelists were F. Gray Handley, Associate Director for International Research Affairs at the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); Helena J. Chapman, AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow, University of Florida; Rachel Evans, a researcher in Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Institute; Valerie Miller, an expert with the Environmental Defense Fund and Marga Gual Soler, Senior Project Director at the AAAS Center for Science Diplomacy.

The historic relationship of cooperation that has existed between the Academy of Science of Cuba and the AAAS as well as its promotion in times of diplomatic challenges, the cooperation between Cuban and American scientists in arbovirus research, the elimination of tuberculosis, fishing sustainability and the case study on international cooperation between the Center for Molecular Immunology of Cuba and the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Institute, were some of the topics addressed during the event.

In his remarks to the audience, the Cuban Ambassador highlighted the traditional relationship that has brought the scientific communities of both countries together and the existing potentialities for expanding cooperation in this regard, as he also thanked organizations such as the AAAS and MEDICC Review for their leadership, support and commitment with the cooperation in the fields of health and science between both countries.

The Cuban diplomat highlighted important moments in the relationship between the two countries in these areas, as were the visits to Cuba and to the United States by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and by the Cuban Minister of Health, and the signing of two memorandums of understanding that are still in force, despite the changes in the Cuba policy implemented by the current U.S. administration.
