This May Day, International Workers' Day, was special, because at the Residence of the Cuban Ambassador in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian doctors who graduated in Cuba gathered to remember their stay on the Caribbean Island and celebrate their ties with our country.
During the morning and part of the afternoon, it was a pleasure to listen to people born on the other side of the world speak in Spanish about their experiences and learnings, how their lives had changed, and their longing for the years of rice congrí and caldosa; of guaguas and teachers loved, feared or respected... all this with an endearing Cuban accent.
This activity was emotional, as the doctors remembered their first interviews to obtain scholarships that Cuba gives to medical students from all over the world, and they all mentioned their feelings of joy and nervousness at those moments.
“It is a pleasure to see the then fearful boys and girls now turned into professionals, who help improve the health of patients in Malaysia, whether in the cities or in towns that are difficult to access,” highlighted the ambassador, while congratulating them. He asked to keep the custom of meeting and maintaining the link between them, which also means keeping ties with Cuba alive.
The day concluded with the promise of more similar meetings, while the doctors assured that they were going to continue with the activities they carry out as a chapter within the Friends of Cuba Association in Malaysia (FOCA), of which one of the doctors, Jiva Sunthri Kunasekaran, is vice president.
