President of Cuba inaugurates XVII Summit of ALBA-TCP in Havana

Havana, December 14, 2019. With the words of the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the XVII Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples Trade Treaty was inaugurated this Saturday. (ALBA-TCP).

“Welcome to our country, which is all of you; it is very pleasant for us that today this summit is held in Cuba”, were the first words of the Head of State when addressing the attendees at the forum, including the presidents of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro; of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, as well as the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves.

Díaz-Canel highlighted that this Saturday marks the 15th anniversary of the foundation of ALBA-TCP by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, and by Commander Hugo Chávez Frías.

He mentioned that "the current regional situation and the prospects of ALBA-TCP at the present juncture" will be the central points on which he will discuss during this day.

"I encourage you to jointly assess proposals to take advantage of our capabilities and strengths, we must emphasize ALBA-TCP as a platform for political coordination in defense of independence, peace and integration from solidarity and cooperation."

As a result of the deliberations, Díaz-Canel added that a final Declaration will be adopted.

The XVII Summit of ALBA-TCP takes place in Havana with the participation of heads of State and Government, and other representatives of high-level delegations from member countries and guests, to discuss the current situation of the region and international level, as well as the role of the Alliance in this context, 15 years after the creation of this mechanism of political agreement.

The ALBA-TCP is made up of Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Granada, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and Haiti (permanent guest).
