GENEVA, 30 March 2017. On the eve of the next visit to Cuba by Ms. Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, Special Rapporteur on the human rights of victims of trafficking in persons, especially women and children, the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today handed over to the Special Rapporteur the National Action Plan for the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons and the Protection of Victims, for the period 2017-2020.
Cuba considers that the anticipated delivery of the National Plan will facilitate the achievement of the objectives of the Special Rapporteur visit to the country. The Plan confirms the commitment and endeavors of the Cuban Government to comply with the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, which complements the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, as well as other obligations assumed in the field of human rights and in the prevention and confrontation of crime.
Aware of the fact that trafficking in persons violates the human rights of victims, the Cuban Government maintains a policy of "zero tolerance" for this crime, which is based on three fundamental pillars: prevention, combating trafficking and protecting the victims.
