REMARKS BY THE CUBAN AMBASSADOR TO AUSTRIA, PABLO BERTI OLIVA, ON THE 171ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF JOSÉ MARTÍ. Danube Park in Vienna, Austria (January 26, 2024)

Distinguished colleagues of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Austria;

Dear friends of the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association;

Dear compatriots:

Next Sunday will mark the 171st anniversary of the birth of the National Hero of the Republic of Cuba, José Martí Pérez. It is for that reason that we gather today in front of the bust that evokes his figure.

Martí will be and will always be a man of culture, as well as a politician, a humanist, an orator, a teacher.

He is the direct mentor of the Cuban Revolution, the man whose word must always be resorted to in order to give the right interpretation of the historical phenomena we are living and the man whose word and example must be remembered every time we want to say or do something transcendent in and about Cuba.

José Martí is much more than Cuban: he is American; he belongs to all the countries of our continent and his ideas are respected not only in Cuba but in all America. You cannot write the universal history of the 20th century, nor can you write the history of Cuba or the Americas, without mentioning him.

Dear colleagues:

Martí can be honored by quoting his phrases, beautiful phrases, perfect phrases and, moreover, and above all, just phrases. But we should honor Martí in the way he would have wanted it to be done, when he said at the top of his lungs: "The best way to say is to do".

The present time continues to be a time of definitions; that is why we continue to strive to build a more just society, we work to boost the country's economy and face the global crisis, we fight against the genocidal blockade, the inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism and, above all, we keep the Revolution alive.

Not to let Martí die today is our generational duty, it is our deep conviction to move forward as standard bearers of the force of truth and ideas.

That is why today, when we lay this wreath before his bust in this park, we pay tribute to him and remember that his sacrifice was not in vain. We also remember those who made it possible for his ideas to prevail beyond death; the legions who suffered and suffered in search of a path for Cuba, for that Cuba for which we fought.

That is why we proudly say to you: Master, we will continue to fulfill your legacy!

Cuba and its friends around the world thank you!

Thank you very much.
