Respect Fidel! November 25, 2020, 4th anniversary of his passing.

Last night on the evening news there was a story about the life-saving medical collaboration with a Belizean team of nurses, doctors and technicians in collaboration with Dr. Mauro Castelló, 2nd in charge of the Cuban Medical Brigade to Belize. I think it must remind us of the valuable humanitarian support Cuba has given to Belize for 30 years.

Today is the anniversary of the passing of Cuba’s great leader Fidel Castro. I remember in early December 2016 students from my school SJC, inspired by their history teacher Carlos Quiroz, had written a collective condolence letter to the people of Cuba. They then made a visit to the Cuban Embassy to hand deliver the letter along with an art work drawing of a young Fidel.

This morning I reflect on the hard work, commitment and selfless dedication that many Cubans have given to us across Belize over the years. People like Maria del Carmen Lozada Concepción, head of the Medical Brigade and her able team. Also, persons like Roger Luis Ramirez Esclona, the coordinator of the Henry Reeve contingent and his team who were the first ones on the ground in Belize when the Covid19 pandemic broke out across the world in March.

The media reported that baby Enver Marin’s surgery would have cost close to one million dollars, but I think a very valuable thing about this moment is the Solidarity Cuba shows to Belize.

So, this morning I just wanted to offer my respect and gratitude to the people of Cuba, and their government for honouring the revolutionary ideas of Fidel.
