New York, 1 August 2022. Robert Manfred, Commissioner of Major League Baseball (MLB), acknowledged that the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) is the only one mandated recruit the Cuban team and that his organization has neither voice nor vote in it.
The statements of the U.S. executive come after the pressure exerted by the promoters of the Association of Professional Cuban Ballplayers, a group that emerged recently with declared political objectives, reported Cuban sports publication Jit.
This group intended to represent Cuba in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, a clear attack on the power and right the FCB has maintained since its creation to manage the formation of the Cuban teams and their participation in international events.
Manfred pointed out in a press conference that "the World Baseball Classic is endorsed by the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC), the governing body of this sport at the international level, and competitions like the Classic have their rules that has to be endorsed".
