London, Nov 18 (Prensa Latina) A new edition of the film festival Screen Cuba: Films to Change the World is in the works in the United Kingdom and promises to showcase part of the Caribbean island’s extensive cinematographic production.
The event will screen films that are part of the best of Cuban cinema from the 1960s to date, according to Cuban diplomatic sources.
Organized jointly by the Music Fund for Cuba, the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), the second edition of the festival will be held from the 16th through 29th of March, 2025. The first edition was very successful with the British public. Therefore, plans are being made to bring the festival to other venues and cities for two weeks, allowing various audiences to take a look at the island through its cinema.
Screen Cuba seeks to offer a varied programme of Cuban films and documentaries in its cinemas in various cities in the United Kingdom.
Located in Covent Garden, in central London, The Garden Cinema will once again be one of the main venues, where viewers will be able to enjoy classic Cuban films and recent productions that address issues such as national identity, the impact of the revolution, as well as daily life.
The event will also feature Cuban guests from the film industry, who will participate in workshops and debates on topics such as the evolution of cinema in Cuba since 1959; their experiences and perspectives.
A salient aspect of the festival is the commitment to the preservation of cinematographic works. This is possible through the appeal of the Music Fund for Cuba to raise funds that will be used for ICAIC's projects to restore films as well as other projects underway.
Two iconic animated short films created by Juan Padrón——Elpidio Valdés Against the Military Train and An Elpidio Valdes Adventure—— were the first to benefit from the funds raised in the first edition and have already been restored in collaboration with the Colombian Film Heritage Foundation.
Screen Cuba has become a highly anticipated cinematic proposal that reaffirms the solidarity efforts to show Cuban culture in this country told by Cubans and friends of Cuba, from different stages of our history through an increasingly enriched cinema.
It will once again be a bridge between cultures that will allow viewers to connect with the Cuban reality.
