The St Vincent and the Grenadines/Cuba Friendship Society extends warm and fraternal greetings to the Government and People of the Republic of Cuba on the occasion of the celebration of the 62nd anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. Cuba is very dear to our hearts and each year our admiration for the courage, determination and selfless solidarity of Cuba intensifies.
Unfortunately the celebration of this historic occasion is tempered by the effects of the global coronavirus pandemic from which no country is immune. Cuba, like the rest of the Caribbean is having to combat its effects both on the health of its people as well as its crippling impact on our economies and social development.
Yet in spite of this pandemic which incidentally has killed more citizens of the USA than those of any other country on earth, the heartlessness of imperialism is being exposed in the actions of the dying Trump regime in taking further measures to tighten sanctions against Cuba. These include actions to block remittances from Cuban-Americans to their families in Cuba as well as to block humanitarian flights by US airlines to Cuba. There is danger than in the last days of its existence the Trump regime may even take further actions which can threaten peace in this hemisphere.
But all these have not deterred Cuba from its solidarity actions worldwide including assistance to countries in the field of health. In addition to the famous health brigades, Cuba is providing assistance to countries like ours to help us to better combat the global pandemic. No wonder there is more and more support for the nomination of the Cuban Health Brigades for the 2021 Nobel peace Prize. We support this process unequivocally.
So as we celebrate with the Cuban people the 62nd anniversary of their glorious triumph in 1959, there is all the more reason for us to stand in solidarity with the Cuban Revolution and its valiant people. We reiterate our support for them and join the rest of the freedom-loving people of the world in calling for an end to the criminal embargo against Cuba, and for the US government to give a positive response to President Miguel Diaz-Canel’s call for unconditional dialogue between Cuba and the USA with a view towards normalisation of relations between both countries.
Long live the Cuban Revolution and the friendship between the peoples of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Cuba!
