Monrovia, June 3, 2022 - The South African Ambassador Prof Iqbal Jhazbhay paid a courtesy visit to the Cuban Head of Mission in Liberia Mercedes L. Martinez Herrera, during which they discussed issues of common interest and particularly recalled the visits of African leader Nelson Mandela to Cuba and Commander in Chief Fidel Castro to South Africa, and the friendship that united the two leaders.
During the meeting, which took place in a fraternal atmosphere in keeping with the relationship between the two countries, the South African diplomat thanked Cuba for its assistance to the liberation struggle of the South African people against Apartheid, the training of human resources from his country in Cuba, and the sending of more than 200 specialists from the Cuban Medical Brigade "Henry Reeve" who devoted themselves to the battle against the pandemic in this sister African nation.
For her part, Cuban diplomat Martínez Herrera expressed her gratitude for the firm position of solidarity maintained by the South African people and government in support of the struggle against the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the U.S. government for more than 60 years, and at the same time gave an update on the issue.
The deep and special relationship between Cuba and South Africa was cemented in the battlefields of southern Angola, where almost half a million Cubans joined their destiny with that of the African combatants to reject the military intervention of Apartheid and imperialism in the African continent.
