Tribute to Fidel on the 95th anniversary of his birthday

Ottawa, August 13, 2021 - On Friday afternoon, members of the Embassy of Cuba in Canada, together with a group of friends from organizations that are part of the Canadian Network on Cuba, commemorated the 95th anniversary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.

In her remarks, Ambassador of Cuba to Canada, Josefina Vidal, referred to the ideology and life of the Commander-in-Chief, who among many values bequeathed to us the practice of solidarity, which has become an essential principle of Cuban foreign policy since the very beginning of the Revolution. She recalled the solidarity shown by Cuba towards other peoples in the course of the last year, through the work of 57 medical brigades of the "Henry Reeve" contingent that assisted 40 countries and territories in the fight against COVID-19. At the same time, she expressed her deep gratitude for the solidarity that Cuba and its people have been receiving from many friends and compatriots in Canada, at a time when the country is facing the combined negative impact of the pandemic and the economic, commercial and financial blockade that the government of the United States tightened and maintains in the midst of the current health emergency affecting the world. She affirmed that, as Fidel taught us, Cuba will continue to promote and defend the exercise of solidarity as a way to achieve a better world, which is necessary and possible.

Representing Cuba solidarity groups in Canada, Pierre Soublière expressed his admiration for Fidel's work, and highlighted the legacy and example he leaves for Cuba and for all progressive forces in the world.
