UN Women Representative pays courtesy visit to Cuban Head of Mission in Liberia.

Monrovia, June 24, 2022 - This morning, Cuban Head of Mission Mercedes L. Martinez Herrera paid a courtesy visit to UN Women Representative in Liberia Comfort Lamptey, who has a long history of working to advance women's rights in the African region and around the world.

During the meeting, Cuban diplomat Martínez Herrera proudly illustrated the progress made by women in the Cuban revolutionary process and highlighted that 53.22% of parliamentarians are women, being the second parliament in the world with the highest female participation and that Cuba was the first country to sign and the second to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

She stressed that, in Cuba, the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States is an obstacle to the full development of the country, the advancement of women, and also constitutes a form of direct and indirect violence that impacts and hinders the enjoyment of the fundamental rights of Cuban women, including their right to development.

The names of Yamila González Ferrer and María Guadalupe Guzmán were present in this exchange.

Ms. Lamptey is originally from Ghana.
